We try, we really do try to do our bit with promoting the idea of a sustainable planet. It’s really easy to talk about and perhaps we do a little too much talking! However, we also attempt to back up our ramblings with practical demonstrable action. One such active example is our ability to collect and store rainwater, should it ever rain again, due to the kindness of our neighbours in the Royal Mail parcel collection building next door.

Under ideal conditions, 6mm of rainfall onto next door’s roof, would yield 6000 litres of water, allowing us to distribute that water around the farm and helping us to navigate through the county’s hosepipe ban. Once the containers are empty, we’re in the same boat as everyone else. Perhaps a boat reference, given the current drought conditions wasn’t the best choice of analogy, but it’s done now!

Over on the south side of our site, situated next to the kitchen, we’ve installed an all natural reedbed based water filtration system that allows us to recycle our grey waste that can in turn be used for watering certain crops, generally it’s the stuff that will require peeling such as carrots, beetroot and potatoes.

On site, complimenting our work with water conservation, we also have a state of the art waterless composting toilet that is straightforward to use, extremely clean and completely odour free. You can come and see all this stuff for yourselves on most weekdays. If the gates are open, then we’re open for a chat about growing, connecting people in the community and eating!
