Our third Rootstock festival takes place on Saturday 22nd June. The weather has been fantastic for the first two, so lets hope it behaves itself on Saturday.

At last years Rootstock there was a great mix of musical styles, folk, hip hop and stuff that we’d rather not categorise, try as we might. As well as the music our arts and crafts stalls are always popular giving our community the opportunity to experience togetherness through music, arts and food. The festival is outdoors and the attractions are accessible for all. Our site is alcohol free. There is no booze and no bull, making the entire day an enjoyable experience for all.

Rootstock Music

On of our main attractions and back by popular demand is Peter K Rollins (aka Experimental Sonic Machines). This well travelled performer makes the transformation from normal bloke to Robot on stage. Peter makes all his own instruments and they are all played using his own physical energy. This entails a lot of winding and whirring which results in a totally unique sound. His instruments are just as fascinating as his music and they all pack away into a neat little box. Peter performs loads of gigs, travelling all the way from Lincoln before he disrobes and is back to the train station in time for another gig back home in Lincoln. This experience is not to be missed.

Arts and Crafts

There is always lots of work to be done on festival day, and this is where the volunteers play a big part. Working together erecting stalls and gazebos etc ensures the festival can go ahead. Lots of jobs can’t be done alone, so team work makes the dream work. Our volunteers have established themselves into valued members of the Rooted team and they are involved in a lot of the arts and craft activities we run throughout the year, not just at Rootstock.

We met one of our volunteers at the first Rootstock festival where she was selling her knitwear, and after a chat about loneliness and isolation she joined the regular weekly women’s group. She has now alleviated her fears for wool crafts being forgotten by future generations, as she runs classes in crochet, weaving and knitting. Not only that, she has also exhibited her work in our famous Red container performance and gallery space, where all the Rootstock action happens. There will also be the opportunity to have your portrait done by local artists as well as face painting for the kids, or adults, if you fancy it.

Rootstock Food

Obviously our now famous homemade wood fired pizza oven will be working overtime on the day, but with food being at the core of what we do there will be much more besides. Soups, various cuisines from around the world. Last year we had Burmese, this year there might be a Moroccan tagine! Come and sample our wares, it’s all fresh and homemade.

All in all, Rootstock is a great free event that is becoming a regular fixture in the city. Donations and sponsorship make it all possible so if you want to do your bit and help maintain this great event you can help by donating here. Hope to see you there!
